You can't argue that that isn't true. I've noticed though that there are now more and more adverts with naked men in them (on UK TV this is), in particular one that just shows loads of shots of this guys arse (in black and white though, so it's more arty so that's fine of course) in a far more blatant way than I've ever seen a womans arse in an advert... we're talking full-on arse here, not half-hidden dimly-lit half-arseness.

Personally I don't mind the whole increased nudity on TV thing too much, although I'll probably feel differently when I have kids.

Also, it seems like the attitude in the UK to nudity on telly is quite different to other places, especially 11pm-midnight on Channels 4 and 5 which is basically poorly-disguised-adverts-for-porn hour. 'Ban This Filth' program for example.

I'd like to make a couple of points, having read what other people have said (I'm a bit surprised I've got you all fired up)

there is no apparent reason why this naked, headless woman is used on the Manics album, she has no apparent symbolism or relation to the music. It baffles me, what is she doing there? She is a skinny model, her value appears to be as a sexual object, I can't see that she is there to represent 'Life' or womankind.

There are times when I feel oppressed by what men and society seem to expect from me as a woman, the bombardment of images of the perfect, skinny, plucked and waxed woman, the constant stream of articles telling me how to satisfy my man in bed. Impossible goals. Society is still male dominated, my life and career are still limited by male domination. I seriously doubt that the organisation I work for would have a femals executive.

One of you mentioned getting a comment on your arse from a woman, you know that she gets comments and whistles and leers a hundred times more often than you do!

I can't believe the Manics didn't knowlingly use that image as a cover. I've never been a fan and even though I think they've always been more rhetoric rather than actually doing something, I'm saddened they've done this and they do know better.

I think there is a huge thing with porn that the media indirectly teaches people its alright. My attitude towards it has (pardon any pun fnar fnar yawn yawn) softened over the years and i'm sure thats in part due to the increasing use of the female body to shift mens/teenage lads mags. You know that familiarity breeding contempt etc. I think the exploitation thing too is overlooked these days. Sure there are plenty of models and britney types who knowingly use their sexuality for financial gain but I honestly believe their behaivour does put woman under more pressure to follow them. And I also think that it has a danger to portray them more as sex symbols etc which can lead to lack of respect, viewing of woman as objects and whilst plenty of men see woman far beyond the sex object thing, the uk lad mag thing etc has bought alot more sexism back into everyday life (having gone years without hearing any footie fans sing "get yer tits out" at a game i've lost count of the number of teams fans i've heard chant in the last couple of years, not good).

As for georgewb - carey was as bad, half of his backroom team were on record as saying there's a case for a war with iran - 'tis a damning indicement that the "worlds largest decomcracy" offers its voters no alternatives at all.... sound familiar?

Porn is like a car crash. I know it's wrong yet I can't help looking. I do apologise. I guess I try and justify myself by saying I've never bought any in my life, and therefore no one profits. The same can't be said for the likes of FHM et al. My excuse on that one is that I was thick as pigshit until four years ago.

there is nothing "wrong" with porn.

yes, obviously there are extremes which are violent or degrading or whathaveyou. but extremes, in my opinion, are not a terribly good thing any way you slice it in most any situation.

but let's not paint the whole picture with one brush here. people like watching people fuck. sex is good -- it's not dirty or wrong or something to be ashamed of. and what you choose to get off on is your own business. there are women directors and producers of porn now -- not all of it is male-dominated exploitive bollocks.
