I've been thinking of buying a new mp3 player, so if anyone knows what to buy, it would be good to hear your recommendations. And Kinkster can tell me what
not
to buy...
My reliable Creative Nomad MuVo 128MB has served me well during the last two years, but I think it's time for a change now. It's not working perfectly fine anymore, but I've carried it with me almost everywhere so I'm surprised that I haven't managed to completely break it somehow yet.
Now I'm looking for an mp3 player with
at least
2GB 'disk capacity'. Also, it has to be durable enough - if it breaks when someone sits on it, or it doesn't like Finnish winter, then it's no good!
I saw quite a nice 20GB Phillips mp3 player today, it wasn't too expensive either. It had nice menus and it looked cool... but it was pretty big! Are all the ~20GB ones that huge or was this just an exception?

My Novatech 20gb Hard Drive player with microphone and radio was fantastic at £150 quid.
For the 3 months it lasted anyway.......... _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,

I have an Archos Jukebox Multimedia.
http://www.archos.com/
Its basically a 20GB hard disk in a portable box that plays any mp3's you put on it. i like it. sure its not as slick at an iPod, but in my mind its a lot better, as you don't have to use the rubbish iTunes to stick stuff on it, and there is no "digital rights managment". You just plug it in, it becomes a new drive letter on your PC, and drag files from your pc to a folder on it. then play them.
It records too, but its not been that good with the mic i've tried. It can also play mp4 (divx) video files too, if you can be bothered to encode them at the right resolution.
Though mine isn't the current model, its now available cheap on ebay, and there are a few nice looking new models too. I got mine in the US, but all though its a French comapny, it was cheaper (new) there than it was in the UK or in Europe. Well worth a look.

Thanks everyone.
Can you plug the player in the USB port, neil?
(I suppose they all work that way now, but just checking...)

I was thinking about getting one of those Zen Micros, but they look a bit weird I think. Not that that should matter so much I guess. It's Apple's fault for making the iPod mini look so damn cool, it makes me want to buy one even though I know that other makes are probably better really.

.
So, should I buy one of those little bastards?
Creative Zen Micro
I've heard too many horror stories about iPods, so I don't want to waste my
money on something that doesn't work properly. This little baby however
seems to be pretty much something that I'm looking for (it's cheaper than
most of the iPods too!), but I've heard that the rechargeable battery that
comes with it is really awful and doesn't last long.
Lazarusbf, or anyone who knows - is that true? _________________

ok all you iPodders!
I've heard that you have to convert the music into some wanky format
before you can transfer it on the player? So you can't just directly copy your
mp3's onto it? That sounds a bit difficult.
Also, is it true that the iPod battery isn't replaceable?
Can you plug it into any computer with Windows (XP) in the USB (2.0) port
without problems?
Zen Micro has a radio and a voice recorder too which the iPod doesn't have,
so that's pretty cool. But because of some minor flaws I think I'll wait for the
next generation of Zen Micros though before buying one... or then I'll buy
something else. _________________
