You know the one, the one that the media hyped up, initially got good reviews, and you'd tried to convince yourself that it was great too, listening and listening again and again until it slowly dawns on you that you have a stinking disappointing turd on your hands...I'm talking
Be Here Now: Oasis
Fat of the Land: Prodigy (not utter shite, but not what the follow up to Jilted should have been in my mind)
Yes Please (the mondays)
Second Coming...has its fans, but no way lived up to The Stone Roses
.....and then there are albums that the popular consensus say are shite that I think are among some artists best work..i.e. Drukqs by Aphex Twin and Room on Fire by The Strokes (I think this is far better than Is this it), X&Y by Coldplay, I struggle against this album because everything about it shouts poncey shit but it draws me in ..why oh why? _________________ www.myspace.com/storkboychoons

This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours... which I bought during release week... roughly a month and a half after acquiring and almost instantly becoming obsessed with The Holy Bible... what a limp effort in contrast. Be Here Now is a classic in comparison!*

The only album I ever bought and was disappointed with is The Last Broadcast by Doves. I loved the first single from it, bought it on impulse... and haven't listened to it since. I know I should probably give it another chance but it just doesn't appeal anymore. _________________ "It's too beautiful to stay inside..." |

That song kind of left you with some hope that Oasis might still possibly have it in them. It was misguided hope, but I still think that the only good Oasis songs after Definitely Maybe were the ones Noel Sang.
This Is My Truth....
It's not a Holy Bible by a country mile is it? It's not even the one with "Design For Life" on it who's title escapes me! I still like Black Dog and I'm Not Working though.
Prodigy were the king's new clothes as far as I'm concerned, that includes ..Jilted Generation. I don't see what was so good about it, it struck me as the sort of thing John Lydon should have been doing in a vain middle aged attempt to be "down wiv the kids" and rebellious. See also the Chemical Brothers. Very dull.
I never liked the Stone Roses either, but even then I think that Second Coming was complete rubbish as opposed to their first album which was just not very good.
My other vote for this category goes to Bloodflowers by The Cure. Although it was billed as the 3rd in the trilogy that started with Pornography and Disintegration, it was nowhere near either of those and is quite possibly the weakest Cure album ever along with Wild Mood Swings. Both those have a couple of decent tracks though, so there was probalby a great EP or two in there.... _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

sorry, I didn't phrase that very well. It should have said:
*not includin' Magic fookin' Pie, which was anythin' but magic
I mean, Noel quotes a Tony Blair speech in the lyrics (and not even in a negative sense)
I'd have hated This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours either way, but to hear it so soon after getting into The Holy Bible really was the kiss of death for it. The album with A Design For Life on it is Everything Must Go, btw... the album where all but one of the good songs were penned by Richey, who'd already fecked off by then... Whatever happened to their claim that they'd split up if any one of them ever left the band?

Agree entirely, loved n still love lost souls, but last broadcast was pretty dull imo.
In terms of high expectations "rings around the world" weren't as good as i'd hoped but as thats the only blot on their otherwise perfect soundscape i don't feel let down,
on the richard ashcroft thing, never liked his solo singles so steared clear but i'll confess to being a bit disappointed with urban hymns, northern soul is bloomin' perfect but uh veers from the extraordinary (bitter sweet symphony) to local radio cannon fodder (sonnet).
always found massive attack albums a bit patchy too - always fantastic moments but always some filler. |

Most disappointing album ever has got to be Nellyville by Nelly. Although he's now Disney's rapper of choice and about as cool as me, i.e. devastatingly uncool, his first album was fantastic. Me and my flatmate played it to death and considered quitting our jobs in order to join the St. Lunatics.
But the second album is a ropey old thing that not even "Hot In Herre" can redeem. I was gutted and my stinging criticism meant that it only went on to be the second highest selling album in the world in 2002. |

I have to say I thought their most recent album, 'The Cure' was more disappointing. I always thought Bloodflowers and Wild Mood Swings were good half albums - some great tracks but ruined by some very poor ones (Thankfully - the ipod solves that problem!). 'The Cure' probably has one or two decent tracks at best. It's a shame, but since Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Disintegration and Wish it's been downhill.
I never bought in to the Trilogy stuff musically (apart form the superb DVD). It always seemed to me to be a marketing ploy.... _________________ Inspire in me, the desire in me to never go home... |

I recall being so let down by 'Brighten the Corners' by Pavement at the time that I got heavily into the first Placebo album instead. Oof. _________________ never ever bloody anything ever |

OK Computer. eventually got into it a bit, but there's no sex there, stale air mostly. Hail to the Theif was phenomenal though.
Paul Westerberg's Folker, following the incomparable Come Feel Me Tremble.
Oasis are an eternal heartbreak.
Runner Up goes to the still unreleased FreeHeat/Jim Reid record. I'm worrried Ol' Jim's goin the way of Syd Barrett and Axl Rose.... _________________ "Even I know the solution: love, music, wine and revolution..." (magnetic fields)

My brother bought "The Best of The Human League" and its not got "Don't You Want Me" on. It has other songs from Dare but not their biggest hit. It was only £2.99 but my brother was definitely disappointed. |

Cheap so called 'Best Ofs' can be a nightmare - I got a 'Best Of' Marvin Gaye for £3. Should have known: no Heard It Through The Grapevine, pretty much every track a bloated live version. _________________ Scattershot Writing: www.jameseverington.blogspot.com |
