Okay I have taken it upon myself to launch the albums of the year thread. For me the serious contenders are:
Yellow house: Grizzly Bear (absolutely awesome american psychedelic folk rock whatever, a true keeper)
Return to Cookie Mountain (TV on the Radio): Good but not as good as some people tried to tell me it was
Ys (Joanna Newsom): I'll be honest I havenae listened to this much, but it's on my to do list as my brother reckons it's the new astral weeks (whatever that means)
At the corner of Miles and Gil (Shack): Loving some of the melodies on this
Lindstrom (It's a feedeelity affair) My token electronic submission, it's class, I've been loving heaps of dance stuff, but there have been very few coherent albums, but perhaps the album is dead??
All in all there wasn't that much, most albums I was about to mention such as Animal Collective (feels) were apparently released last year. I'm sure I've overlooked a few though
What else was good this year folks? _________________ www.myspace.com/storkboychoons

For me, this years gems have been:
The Flaming Lips
Hot Chip
Beck
Akira The Don
Gnarles Barkley
My favourite gigs have been:
Pixies - Benicassim
Soulwax (Niteversions / 2ManyDJs) - Benicassim
Erol Alkan - Benicassim(!)
Hope of The States - Sheffield Leadmill
Idlewild - Sheffield Plug (actually, it's tonight, but I'm very much looking forward to it!)
Disappointment of the year - managing to miss bravecaptain THREE times through a.) Fucked neck b.) Cancelled gig and c.) being skint. Going to regret all three for a very long time...
Other disappointments / stinkers include Scissor Sisters and The Killers both releasing top comeback singles, followed up with shite albums. Hope of The States splitting up.
I'll keep editing this post as and when i remember things....

My albums of the year are:
Fishscale - Ghostface Killah
Rather Ripped - Sonic Youth
Dreamt For Light Years... - Sparklehorse
For Hero: For Fool - Subtle
Hearts and Unicorns - Giant Drag
Last year my two favourite albums of the year, 29 and Confessions On A Dance Floor came out really late on though so stay tuned. The new Ghostface Killah and Nas ones, as well as the Billy Idol Christmas album, all come out in the next few weeks so there's still all to play for
Single of the year:
Young Folks - Peter, Bjorn and John
Gig of the year:
Public Enemy (except the Flava Flav solo bits)
Disappointment of the year:
Fernando Morrientes leaving and scoring 12 goals a game in Spain. He should have been so good for us. |

Albums of the year:
bravecaptain - distractions
The Dawn Parade - The Dawn Parade
Erasure - Union Street (acoustic album)
Grandaddy - Just Like The Fambly Cat
Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental
(Like John Mc said, I think it's still to play for. I've asked for a lot of CDs for Christmas so I'll be a bit indecisive until then.)
Single of the year:
Paperlung - Days That God Sold You
Gig of the year:
Haven't been to any.
Disappointment of the year:
Far too many bands splitting up. Grandaddy and The Dawn Parade in particular will be missed.

Why did nobody tell me about this? Doesn't matter anyway as I'm at uni tonight. Incidentally, is the sign-up thing on their website not working or is the track not released yet? _________________ "It's too beautiful to stay inside..." |

I have no idea Melz my friend. I only realised they had a single out when I read the NME earlier. Return to their older, noisier side? GET IN!! Can't wait for tonight.

Edit: Melz, when you click register it all looks the same, but check the small print - mine says, "check your inbox on the 4th December for a link to your free download". _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,

Albums:
Joanna Newsom - Ys
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go
Semifinalists - Semifinalists
Tilly and The Wall - Bottom of Barrels
Singles:
'Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill' or 'Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag' depending on what mood I'm in.
Gigs:
Radiohead - Hammersmith Apollo 19/05
Flaming Lips - Bournemouth IC
Isobel Campbell - Brighton Komedia
Sigur Rós - Southampton Guildhall
Disappointments of the year:
Flaming Lips album. Gorky's officially splitting up (at least there was a bit of hope before! ) Feeling ill at 'The Go Team' gig so I couldn't dance around like an idiot. The rise of downloads over physical formats. People investing money and time listening to Razorlight and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly.
Looking forward to in 2007:
Seeing Bloc Party and The Decemberists. Hopefully seeing Joanna Newsom if some kind soul will sell me a ticket for a reasonable price. Radiohead album? New music. |

So that's five different album of the year polls and not a single album mentioned twice. Apart from the Joanna Newson one. Like Marky Mark's mates, we are a funky bunch.
How about this for an idea you trendy young scamps - when you post your albums of the year you name the two best tracks from each album thus creating your own personal "Now Thats What I Call 2006!" compilation that people can seek out, if they so desire, through legal downloads, illegal filesharing or good old fashioned armed robbery?
C'mon you know you want to.
Mine would be:
9 Milli Bros - Ghostface Killah
Back Like That - Ghostface Killah
Sleepin' Around - Sonic Youth
Reena - Sonic Youth
Shade and Honey - Sparklehorse.
Some Sweet Day - Sparklehorse
A Tale of Apes 1 - Subtle
Middleclass Stomp - Subtle
YFLMD - Giant Drag
Kevin Is Gay - Giant Drag |

The Great Western, James Dean Bradfield.
there was a moment when I wondered whether he'd have the material for a whole solo album and it turned out to be a classy affair. I even had a moment when I wondered whether the quality would be high enough, fool that I am! So good to hear his voice singing lyrics I can relate to (as opposed to recent Manics albums where I curse Nicky Wire for being a tosser/idiot/arsehole and writer of obscure/stupid lyrics)
At the last solo gig I saw him perform I was sad to reflect that the chance of me seeing another such gig was slim. dammit!
for Now That's What I Call Music 2006! I nominate That's no Way To Tell A Lie and Still A Long Way to Go from the above album.
I'll be back when I've figured out which other albums I've bought this year... _________________ (and gillworm! she's so funny!) |

i like etiquette by casiotone for the painfully alone.
but it's not as good as twinkle echo.
"hot boyz"(missy elliott cover) is one of the best tunes i've heard this year.
it's not on the album, but is on myspace. |
