The Underground Reading Club

Martin Carr joins BBC Radio Wales

On Sunday 10th December, as part of Adam Walton’s Musical Mystery Tour on BBC Radio Wales [*see information on how to listen below], former Boo Radley and ex-bravecaptain, Martin Carr, will give us the benefit of his love of reading and lead us through some of his favourite books in a new, once-fortnightly section of the programme called the Underground Reading Club.

This isn’t intended to be pseud’s corner or a literature course; it will be an introduction for the layperson to some of the greatest works of leftfield literature. You won’t need ‘A’ levels or a degree to join this club, just a love of books and a willingness to broaden your literary horizons.

Literature has been a great inspiration to all manner of songwriters, from Bob Dylan [who borrowed his surname from Dylan Thomas] to the Manic Street Preachers, via Martin himself: his former band, the Boo Radleys, were named after a character in Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.

Everyone is invited to join us in reading the book and offering their thoughts and responses via e-mail to: adam.walton@bbc.co.uk

More information as we make it up at:

http://adamwalton.co.uk

The first novel we will be reading is Charles Bukowski’s ‘Ham on Rye’.

Grab a copy at your local library or bookshop and join us between 10pm and 1am on Sunday 10th December on BBC Radio Wales.

Is the ex-captain angling for a slot on the newly revived Jackanory? and will he be reading Ham on Rye in an authentic American accent?

this is a great idea, better go check out the web sites...

I'm thinking of podcasting it too.

Which is against all BBC Wales' guidelines [i.e. I'd be in breach of the BBC's own copyright] - the way I see it, though, is that the more people who hear it [or any part of the show] the better.

More details as I recover from Genod Droog in Bangor last night.

Fight for your right to podcast AdamW. The BBC do it for loads of other spoken word radio programs so surely they can do it for this.

BBC Wales only do it for a religious programme called 'All Things Considered'.

I've argued with them until I looked like an Evertonian in regards to the unsigned, new Welsh music [which has no licensing issues] - but they still won't give me the go ahead.

I think it's a bandwidth issue.

But that's not to say I can't do it myself.

Book clubs are a superb way of interacting with others in a thoughtful manner and also a great way of making friends and getting to know people better. The show sounds interesting. I will tune in if it is available on the internet.

Did any of you lot listen to the underground reading club? I listened to the first hour of the AdamW show but had to go to bed then cos I'm a dull young man...ooo Kirsty Wark is shouting at people on Newsnight, I like it when she gets angry, that slimey bloke from the liberal democrats is right though...anyhow has anyone got an mp3 of the reading club bit of the show.? I've tried the steaming thing and it won't let me fast forward cos computers are rubbish.

In summary:

Kirsty Wark: tough!
That long song by the SFA bloke at the start of the AW show: ace!
Saudi government: don't trust 'em!
Mp3 of the reading club thing: yes please!

Hi John,

There is an mp3 of the first installment on the work computer - but because I have been wall-to-wall busy prerecording shows for the Christmas period, I haven't had a chance to put it online.

Soon, though, I promise.

Good work Mr W.

I hope we get Real Madrid in the Champions League draw, I've always wanted to see us play them.

I wouldn't be averse to a trip to Madrid.

As long as they don't try and 'finger' Benitez when we're over there.

I think we'd beat them too.
