Quote:
Yeah, I suppose you're right, but as a Plymouth fan (no offense! I like Plymouth) I thought you would understand - I may not get another chance to gloat about my team's success any time soon (I don't want to wait another 81 years!), so I got to get the most of it while I still can!

Very Happy

You've got to enjoy the moment and i do understand!

A Rangers mate of mine (fully fledged and has been to so many games he qualified for a uefa final tckt in May) said to me years ago that i'll have more fun and more succsess in following Argyle (relatively speaking) than fans of teams like Spurs will. Whilst Spurs may be the wrong example i'd certainly look at say Charlton or West Ham - clubs with little to celebrate recently and only one sorte in to europe between them - and think he has a point. 2 titles, 3 other promotions, one win at wemblee, fa cup q/f and s/f in my times as a regular attending supporter is an ok return really. and through our various ups and downs i've managed to see Argyle play a competitive match at 87 of next seasons 92 clubs. which has been a really top thing to do (bit nerdy but i don't care! and forbes has done pretty much the same as well so i ain't alone!).

Anyway i'm rambling but i understand yer happy times TommyBoo and when i look at my fave moments (and i'm gonna list them, its late i've been to the louis and enjoyed lovely guinness) its proof that for those of us following a non glamour side what the happy times are don't always equate to trophies etc...

ten fave moments following argyle (in no order)

winning 4-1 at darlo to win our first league title (in any div) in my lifetime - may have only been the bottom league but it was on our way to getting 102 points, we clinched it 400miles from home on a school nite so the turnout was hardcore and we went absolutely mental. also good 'cos we could stand up and being away from home there was no pa man set on drowning out our chants with some awful we are the champions over the loud speakers

beating bristol city 4-0 to get promoted - first time i ever seen us go up!

winning at derby cup q/f replay - let off school for the day and boy what fun it was....ended up with me n my bruv on the front page of the local rag the day after which made our teachers smile! (or not!)

relegated at burnley - really. such a proud day. over 3000 of us stood our ground as the home fans piled on to rub it in. incredible feeling of unity, of being argyle lads n lasses and the greatest reminder that come what may the club, the fan communtiy is what matters most. what happens on the pitch is ultimately secondary.

winning 2-1 at chesterfield in the battle of saltergate - "we've only got 8 men / we've only got 8 men", not one to encourage battles on the pitch but this one had a proper one, far more excessive than even the arse/manu battle at ot in 91/92, it was mad, it was exciting, and bruce grobablar (who was so shite for us and had frankly seemed disinterested for much of the campaign) finally understood that clubs like ours do really care... made the news at 10 too which was a novelty.

beating colchester 3-1 to get to wemblee whilst the towers were still there - a dream realised, the emotional outpouring was incredible. we'd finally got to wemblee....

winning 3-0 at rotherham to go top the league at a proper stage of the season... for, er, 4 days - possibley the greatest night of football ever. nearly all my best mates were there, we played beautiful football, we sang all the way home and it was just ace ace ace.... and as i've said here before geordie in the car boot Laughing

beating qpr 2-0 to win the league - ace 'cos it was at home, the terracing was still there, only my dad was missing and for those like my bruv who couldn't get to darlo this meant everything and the atmosphere was ace.

i'm gonna cheat now 'cos here's 2 - beating leeds 6-4 and beating preston 6-4 - ten goal games are ace when you win them!!!!! preston was particualrly great as my bruv had gone to college that w/e and when i got home my mum said tell 'im he didn't miss much it wasn't much of a game - yeah we were 3-1 down bruv, scored 2 in the last minute, really you didn't miss much Laughing thankfully he was there for leeds and being older than me and having been to skool when leeds were in he naturally loved it!

winning 3-1 at bournemouth on my birthday - weirdly i've seen us win 3 times away on my birthday but this was the best, loads of us there, had taken the afternoon off, had lots of lovely beer in bridport and by the time dalton sweetly chipped their keeper for the 3rd there was barely anyone left on the terrace as men, women, children all went m a d in celebration. daft really 'cos it was a meaningless match!

anyway that's it and i'll try not to bore you with numbers 11-20.....

Great post TTLC Smile

I think it can be more rewarding in many ways to support some smaller club indeed. I know that Barnsley for example will never have a realistic chance to win the Champions League or the Premier League - even if some crazy Russian multi-billionaire invested a lot of money in the club, the town is just too small and its geographical location isn't good enough to attract any good players. But we can win other (smaller) things and it'll always feel great. And if (and that's a big if) Barnsley ever win some bigger trophy, it'll be something so great that there are no words to describe it. Razz

Life at the top seems to be quite static, it's almost always the same few teams who win the Champions League or the Premier League, whereas things are much more exciting below those teams. I've been supporting Barnsley for pretty much exactly 10 years now, and during that time there have been many ups and downs, but I've enjoyed (most of) it.

I was proudly wearing my Barnsley shirt for weeks wherever I went when we won the League 1 playoffs two years ago, and same again this year when we beat Liverpool and Chelsea. Even complete strangers on the street came to congratulate me for our success, it was weird. Very Happy

I've always wondered what it'd be like to be a Man United fan for example... I think it'd be quite awful to be honest. I have a mate who's a passionate fan of them, and he just seems to be pissed off unless they win everything possible every season... and if they do, he's just satisfied that they didn't lose. Perhaps Champions League still provides some excitement for Man Utd fans, but the domestic competitions don't seem to mean so much. They've been successful for so long that they take it for granted... they've got nothing more to achieve! Confused
I bet I was celebrating Barnsley's playoff victory a lot more than the ordinary Man Utd fan was celebrating their Premier League victory. Razz

I will list my favourite moments following Barnsley later, but that'll have to wait until I get back home from work.

I still haven't got home from work. Sad

Heh, I've been meaning to post it for ages, but I have actually been a bit busy recently. Perhaps I'll post it when I come back home from work tomorrow. Razz

I can't say that I'm really looking forward to the new season either, I've quite enjoyed the non-football season as well. We've signed some exciting players but I think we'll struggle in the league again

nothing more to achieve? Don't be daft, they still need to overhaul Liverpool for the most European Cup wins and the most League wins (not to mention the most UEFA Cup, League Cup and European Super Cup wins! Oh, and not forgetting the Screensport Supercup... not sure about Charity Shields)

Alright then, I finally came back home! Laughing
I won't list 10 things this time as it would probably take all night, but I've listed some here. I'm not sure about the order but here you go:

1. Barnsley vs. Swansea
League One play-off final (Cardiff, May 2006)

This was my first match at some bigger stadium, and it couldn't have been a better game! The atmosphere at the Millennium Stadium was amazing, it was great to see all those Barnsley fans. The match was of course very exciting as well, the score was 2-2 after 90 minutes, but Barnsley finally won on penalties. The penalty shootout was horrible to watch, I was so nervous that I was shaking, but the feeling when Nick Colgan saved the decisive penalty was unforgettable. I somehow got a huge bruise on my right leg during the celebrations, but I didn't even notice it until the next morning.

2. Salpa vs. Barnsley
(friendly match in Salo, Finland - July 2000)

I had been supporting Barnsley for a couple of years at this point, but this was the first time I actually saw them live... in my little hometown in Finland!! That wasn't only THE moment when I realised that I would be a Barnsley fan for the rest of my life, it was also one of the strangest things in my life - Barnsley were the first foreign team that had ever played against my local team...!
I met the whole Barnsley team and Dave Bassett as they were training here for two days before the match. Barnsley won the game 4-0, with super-sub Neil Shipperley's amazing second half hattrick!

3. Surviving the administration
(December 2003)
The collapse of the ITV deal and relegation to League One got Barnsley into big financial trouble for far too long. Those were very stressful and worrying times, because at times it looked like I would no longer have a team to support, so the day when Barnsley officially came out of administration was a huge relief.

4. Liverpool vs. Barnsley
(FA Cup 5th round, 2008)
Barnsley played a lot better against Chelsea, but in a way this game was much more memorable and shocking, because no one (including me) expected us to beat Liverpool at Anfield. Howard's last minute winner was probably the best "YEEEESSSS!!!!" moment as a Barnsley fan for me, it was just so unbelievable.

5. Barnsley vs. Chelsea
(FA Cup quarter final 2008)
No one thought that we would beat Liverpool, and when we did, everyone thought that we couldn't do the same again against Chelsea. But Barnsley were actually controlling the game at times, and the moment when Odejayi's header went in was quite surreal! The last few minutes were awful to watch again as Chelsea were putting a lot of pressure on, but we made it! It's a shame that the unbelievable cup run ended in the next game, but I'll never forget those two games.

6. Barnsley vs. Norwich
(April 2002)
This was my first trip to Barnsley and the first time I saw them play in England... Barnsley lost the game 0-2 and got relegated to Division Two for the first time in 20+ years! Still, in some strange way I'm happy that I was there that day. Singing "You'll never walk alone" at the end of the game was probably a bit cheesy and not very original, but I felt proud and it was very emotional... so it turned into a good memory, if you know what I mean!
The rest of my trip was excellent too, the locals were very friendly to me (they gave me a signed Barnsley shirt and a signed ball for example), I got to meet the whole Barnsley team again, and I also featured on the front page of Barnsley Chronicle! Laughing

7. Barnsley vs. Cardiff
(Division Two, November 2002)
No, this isn't the FA Cup semi-final! This was another great game from a few years ago where Barnsley won 3-2, which turned out to be a really important victory, as we were battling against relegation again.

8. Sunderland vs. Barnsley
(Division One, November 1998)
This is one of my first Barnsley memories from the season after our short Premier League visit. (the first Barnsley game I ever saw on TV was the game against Man United where we lost 7-0...)
For some reason they used to show a lot of Barnsley's games back then... I wish they still did!
I remember Ashley Ward scoring, missing a penalty, and then getting sent off in that game - and all in the space of five minutes! Barnsley lost their 2-0 lead, but Darren Barnard got another penalty in the end and Barnsley won 2-3!

one of my greatest football memories is a game at burnden park, bolton in 1993 when they were promoted and we were relegated.

the only game in this country i ever travelled to without a ticket, not expecting or intending to get in, just had to be there.

there were perhaps 500/600 people who had made the same decision, and we were all gathered outside listening to radio lancashire during the first half and listening for cheers from within the ground.

wandering outside burnden park towards the end of the first half i noticed some chap scaling the walls of the old ground. he pulled a rusty air vent cover off the wall, threw it to the floor and clambered in.

about a minute later the large exit door below us slid open and around 15 of us who had been watching this fellow snook in, after which we closed the door and walked in a very orderly fashion up the stairs.

we stood at the very back of the seated home fans and watched the game from there until stewards asked why we were in the home stand - we played dumb and they escorted us to the away terrace to watch the second half.

john mcginley scored the goal that promoted bolton and relegated preston, and at the final whistle the bolton fans were straight on the pitch and charging towards us.

police horses appeared right away to separate the two sets of fans, but the bolton fans made it past them to the away terrace.

to our amazement they just went along the front row and shook our hands, patted us on the back and said "we've been here too, you'll be back" and so on.

when the home fans retreated to their own celebrations we were left with just 2,000 of us stood in almost silence, our players sat on the floor in front of the terrace, many of them in tears.

at the time it seemed like the world had ended, yet today i'm going to watch us in our newly completed stadium, with the chance of going top of the championship if we win, just 15 years later!

looking back, the trip to burnden park in 1993 is as memorable as any promotion or play-off game, and i didn't even expect to be in the ground, let alone be let in by our very own spiderman impersonator!

happy times or sad times, i guess it all just adds to what they refer to as 'life's rich tapestry'!

good post sparky. i'm impressed. and i'm uber impressed that you managed to get in as i suspect i'd have given up on trying and spent the afternoon in the pie shop opposite the main entrance. good pies them were!

like everyone here i wouldn't swap my team for anyones but if i had to have followed another english club in my lifetime then whilst the travelling romantic in me would've wanted carlisle i'd have been well happy with bolton. a fan of theirs my age would've done close to all 92 clubs with bolton and had some top trips to europe to. the perfect football fan experience, from top to bottom, every stratosphere.

anyway what's the championship fixture that was apparently fixed? looking at this seasons and at lots of messageboards it could be barnsley v donny (sorry tommy boo) but my feeling is that some of charltons high scoring ones, involving leads chucked etc look on, er, paper, dodgier than most. though having seen us chuck 2 goal and 3 goal leads away down to sheer ineptitude its daft speculating! anway i think they'll be nothing in it... or that we did genuinely gift brizzle their equaliser a couple of weeks ago!

That's a good choice, I like Bolton too. They didn't buy their place in the Premier League like some other teams, and they've got the best goalkeeper in the league too. Wink

No need to be sorry - even if it is the Barnsley vs Donny match, surely it's their fault and not ours...?

I still doubt it though, these things usually take some time to reach this stage, and this match was too recent. I think it's probably some game from ages ago...

All Liverpool matches are fixed these days. We mess around for the first 74 minutes or so then, at an agreed time, one of the opposition players kicks Xabi Alonso, gets sent off and we romp to another impressive victory. Simple but effective.

Both of Bolton's grounds have been the coldest places in the world. I've only just regained the feeling in my fingers and toes after having sat through a match at Burnden Park 20 years ago.

For the last couple of weeks my listening pleasure has been provided by the Crystal Castles album on repeat. I listen to it walking to work. I listen to it walking home from work. I listen to it a lot. I'm listening to it now. It's bleeping arty mess and I bleeping love it.

It's a good album indeed, my favourite tracks on it are 'Air War' and 'Untrust Us'. Only the first half of the album is excellent though (I don't care so much about the songs after "1991")

Sounds a bit like Barnsley's tactics to me, as they usually tend to be a bit bleep on the second half as well.

crystal castles got so much acer when the got in a drummer. i concur with the album liking love in.

but i don't agree about bolton being the coldest. thats oakwell. oddly its the only place that is warmer since they put the seats in but in the days of it being an open away end with a school railing type fence offering no protection behind yer, fuck it was freezing. by the way i almost got arrested at oakwell once. for taking a photo of the ground.
