... by popular demand: a second week of aural pleasure at...

THE BASEMENT CLUB

a one-off special: ANTIFOLK THIS!

An intimate evening with LACH & The Secrets – New York City's Original Antifolk Master, with support from Paul The Girl, plus guest-DJ’s.

Friday 5th March 2004 @ Highbury Buffalo Bar, N1
259 Upper Street, N1 – Nearest tube: Highbury & Islington
£5:00 - 8pm til late.

"Lach is the mastermind of Antifolk, a loose concept involving acoustic guitars and punk-rock attitude, like a Lower East Side rendezvous of Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. Like black snow, stalled subway cars and random violence, Lach is a Manhattan institution." - NY Times

Originator of the influential Antifolk movement in NYC, LACH was an early forefather of the scene's venues, labels and bands. With the creation of the Antifolk launch-pad, the East Village's Sidewalk Cafe Venue and Fortified Records, LACH piloted Antifolk to become a staple of the New York underground rock circuit, pushing the boundaries of modern music. LACH's own critically-lauded albums and live performances – on his own and with his NYC backing-act The Secrets, who include Roy Edroso of the East Side’s cult The Reverb Motherfuckers, and Billy Ficca of legendary punk-revolutionaries Television – have influenced a whole generation of artists, including luminaries such as Beck. Lach has nurtured some of the hottest names in music of late including The Moldy Peaches, Regina Spektor and Jeffrey Lewis.

Support comes from the UK's own, PAUL THE GIRL. A Northerner transplanted to the wilds of South London, PAUL THE GIRL has made a name for herself by with own brand of twisted, humour-laden songs. At her tender young age, she's already put out her album on her own label, started a novel, provided a soundtrack for two films and received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.

"Without management and on her own tiny label, Paul is making the most original music of any British artist, of either gender. An extraordinary, ravishing evening." - The Guardian

This is a unique, exclusive spin-off event from The Basement Club, London’s commended, monthly co-promotion between The Strokes’ producer Gordon Raphael & online music-magazine rockfeedback.com.
