Bands don't sign away their rights anymore. In the old days they used to get ripped off, The Beatles for example. If you hear a record on an ad then nine and a half times out of ten it's the songwriter who has given permission. A songwriter's songs are his/her primary source of income. You don't need my permission to use 'wake up boo' in eastenders unless, I think, it goes beyond a specified length, same with the footy or plugging tv shows but if you are endorsing a product then you need my permission. Levi's used 'Heart Attack and Vine' By Tom Waits years ago. They used the Screamin' Jay Hawkins version but didn't ask Tom's permission and he sued them into next week (yay!). He also sued Dorito's but I can't remember why, maybe because they taste like dog shit.

I was only joking about XFM Is Ace .

I mean, as someone in the public eye, you must get tired of some people being a bit arse-licky, so I made a joke.

you know I'd never seriously say a bad word about you, right? Wink

hmmm... I think that was a sly plug you made on behalf of Burger King back there.

I bet you have a secret deal with them...

maybe they have a new KINGSIZE burger to promote Smile

also,

Very Happy at 'Primark Scream' and 'Manic Street SalesForce'

tho I see you didn't click the Disable BBCode in this post option in yr 2nd last message, judging by yr little ode to the BBC Rolling Eyes

Poor you, Milano is a dump, aside from the Domo. L&P

The Manics undoubtably have control over how those songs were used, the first was for an ad for Wales and was an instrumental version of Design for Life. The Australia ad annoys me because the song isn't about the country, it's about a very difficult sad time in their lives. Which you're never going to get from that advert! Nicky wire had the cheek to say 'well at least we advertise countries, not products'. At least two of the band have wives and kids, I suspect that's the reason behind the sudden increase in the use of their music in ads, making a nest for the future at a time when their records aren't making as much as they used to. Whether that makes them whores I don't know.

For bands and artists struggling for recognition, an advert placing can give much needed exposure. I'm thinking of 'Open Heart Zoo' on the ad for Lexus cars.

If it's used on the BBC, it's not really a commercial is it? L&P

Jesus thats some list!!! And there are millions of fuckin cool choons there. The two that really break my heart and aint on the list are new slang by the shins in a McShitolds ad, and Badly Drawn Boy's most tender moment in that hokey load of crap selling cornflakes. Sickening, it really does cheapen the song because it slowly robs it of all personal connotations until you hate it and cant hear it without thinking of the ad and wanting to puke blood (thats how I now feel about the shining which used to be one of my fave songs).

quick fix for that: fulfill your secret desire to violently destroy your television, and listen to only public/community radio. Still, there's no excuse for pimping out your artwork. The Mary Chain would die starved in a shit-flooded gutter and have their corpses consumed by rats before they did that. I'm sick of these "rock'n'roll" nancys who'd rather compromise their art than get their silky soft piano hands dirty.

the worst I've heard recently, Aretha Franklin's Think is being used to promote a consumer credit consolidation company over here ( Freedom! Think about it! )
