Hmmm Setareh.

By the way, did anyone else think that the goalkeeper of Greece looks quite a lot like George Clooney? (is that how you spell the name?)
This is not very interesting of course, just thought I would mention it... Oh well.
Spain V Russia... who are you going to support?

I have no idea yet, Finnish people don't usually like Russians for historical reasons, but this is football and a completely different thing.

Next match... Spain V Russia.
Should be a good match... They played in the Euro Championships final in 1964 and Spain won 2-1. Will history repeat itself? Other cheesy comments and updates later! Rolling Eyes

S PAI N 1 - 0 RU SS IA
1-0 Valeron 60.
red card: Sharonov 88.

First half thoughts:
Still 0-0, but a very enjoyable game so far, both sides have shown some good attacking football. Spain controlled the first 20 minutes of the game - Vicente, Morientes and Raúl all had good chances to score. However, Russia got better towards the end and had some good shots on goal. Alenichev of Russia nearly even scored, he dribbled through the Spanish defence, past three players, but Casillas on goal saved Spain with his head (!). Spain were more dangerous throughout the first half though, and Morientes had a great to score from three yards, but the Russia goalkeeper somehow managed to save it.
Urs Meier has shown five yellow cards in the game so far, four for Russia and one for Spain! I don't know if that's a good thing or not, none of them have been that bad really, but it's the little fouls that stop the game that really annoy me. OK, more later...
----------
Right, the match has just ended. The second half wasn't as good as the first, but still nice and positive football. Juan Carlos Valeron scored the winning goal less than thirty seconds after he was substituted in, I wonder if that's one of the fastest goals in European Championships ever.
Urs Meier showed the yellow card nine times and the red card once during the match... seven yellows and one red for Russia, and two yellows for Spain. That's quite a lot, but he just followed the new rules by UEFA.
Spain controlled the second half again, Russia only had a couple of good counter-attacks, but they never really looked like they would score.

Idea

Pre-match comments: Switzerland V Croatia
I really have no idea who I'm going to support this time, I kind of like both of the teams... Croatia should be stronger although they're not as good as they used to be a couple of years ago. All the Liverpool fans here might be supporting Stephane Henchoz of Switzerland, Setareh will be supporting Croatia because of Igor Tudor, who's an excellent player by the way. Rolling Eyes
I have a feeling that both sides will be relatively defensive, but hopefully not... I'd like to see same kind of good football that I saw yesterday.

More later... Watch this space...

FULL TIME:
Swit zer land 0 - 0 Cr o a t ia
Vogel (SUI) sent off - 50 min.

Half-time thoughts:
The match has been pretty boring so far, but now I know that I want Switzerland to win. Croatia has been a little bit better perhaps, but they've also been dirty cheating thugs, and I really hate that.
Well, I'll get myself a beer and concentrate on the second half! And I already hate the fact that I need to go to work tomorrow... The whole world should stop when there's a big football competition going!
-----------------
The second half was a little bit more interesting than the first one. Vogel of Switzerland was sent off only 5 minutes after the start of the second half, so I thought that Croatia would have taken a small risk by being more attackive, but they were disappointing. Switzerland defended very well and they seemed to be happy with the goalless draw in the end. I can understand that though, because they were playing with 10 men only. I'm a bit disappointed at the match referee actually, he couldn't stop the dirty Croatian thugs making those little but dirty fouls.

Well not the most enjoyable game perhaps but I have to say I've seen a lot worse.

Croatia just lost a lot of sympathy points! Switzerland is my favourite in Group B now. I don't really like France or England either, so maybe I still want Croatia to get the second place. But I don't think that's going to happen, Croatia and Switzerland were both very weak, I just can't see them scoring any goals in this competition.

France V England... it's going to be interesting. I don't know which one I'm going to support, perhaps I should choose the one I don't dislike so much during the match. Wink

FR AN CE 2 - 1 EN GLA ND
0-1 Lampard - 38 min.
1-1 Zidane - 90 + 1 min.
2-1 Zidane - 90 + 2 min. (pen)

Beckham - missed penalty 73 min.

Half time thoughts:
Boooooooring!

45 min - 90 min thoughts:
A little bit more interesting but still boring.

90+ min. thoughts:
WTF?! Laughing

Well, it's not all over yet. Switzerland and Croatia were both quite lousy today, and England didn't look all that bad really. A goalless draw would have been a fair result, 2-1 for France was a bit harsh perhaps. This match reminds me of the Champions League final Man United Vs Bayern München some years ago, when Man United scored those two late goals... Owen Hargreaves always seems to be on the wrong side then!!
England played tactically quite a poor match really, but their gamble was almost successful. In a way, I'm glad that it wasn't. England started to defend their undeserved one-goal lead and France was the only side who tried to attack. England had a couple of counterattacks through Rooney though, but that was all really. Well taken free kick by Zizou the Wizard and a nice penalty kick, I don't think that the final result was too unfair.
Good save by Barthez and a poor penalty kick by Beckham, if he had scored it would have been the winning goal surely. BUT... France also had a definite penalty turned down by the referee on the first half when Gary Neville deliberately stopped the ball with his arm inside the penalty box. OK, he was trying to protect himself probably, but that's a foul nowadays. He stuck his arms out when he was jumping in front of the ball and he managed to stop the cross with his hands, surely that should have been a penalty.
Not the best day for Liverpool boys either! A poor match by Owen who didn't have a chance during the match. A silly foul by Heskey that caused the free kick and Zidane punished England for that. Awful awful backpass by Gerrard that lead to France's winning goal..... King was quite a positive surprise and so was Rooney actually, although I didn't like his attitude at all.

Heskey is a blue nose wanker now. Why does he keep playing for England? He is shit. I think overall England played well. Rooney was brilliant.

Well, what if England had actually won the match? I'm sure you wouldn't say that, and Heskey would be a hero of yours just like the others. France's equaliser was partially Heskey's fault indeed, but I don't think he was the worst England player on the pitch today.
You can't blame just one or two players for England's loss. The whole team could have been much better today, and they should have learned already that they should never stop playing before the final whistle.

Partially Heskey's fault?????

He ran up behind the man, grabbed his shoulders and attempted to knee him in the chest!

WANKER! He doesn't even deserve to be in the squad.

I was fucking dumbfounded when Rooney went off.

Well, you wouldn't say any of that if England had won the match...
I think it was only partially Heskey's fault indeed. Why did the English midfield and defense let the French player run with the ball so close to the penalty area in the first place?
I would blame the whole England squad for the idiotic attitude towards the end - never stop playing until the final whistle!!

I agree that throughout the match England sat back and soaked up pressure rather than defending further out. We should have also been attacking more. So yes there is that arguement. However, the tactic of having ten behind the ball whenever France were on in posession worked for 90 minutes. The game was lost by two absolutely horrific mistakes.

I truly would be saying Heskey doesn't deserve to be in the squad even if England had won. By this, I mean not even in Portugal, never mind actually getting time on the pitch. The man has maybe done 2/3 useful things for England in a 5 year career, Ian Wright was given less of a chance despite being a much better player.

Also, what was Gerrard playing at? i wouldn't mind so much if he'd just done one backpass in that game..... but he made more than several, including times when he was on the half way line. To attempt something when you are playing against the fastest and best striker in the world is utter stupidity.
