How do they help to prevent terrorist attacks? Is Blunketts argument solely that the police will be able to stop and identify shady looking characters or is there more to it than that? |

How similar to '1984' would it be if we all got issued ID Cards
Almost scary really.

There was some bloke on the radio yesterday talking about how it marked a massive turning point as the citizens would now be answerable to the Home Secretary instead of the other way around. I'm not sure if its something worth getting worked up about although apparently most people were in favour of it in Australia but when they found out the full details of the scheme they turned against it. |

What they're trying to do is pressure you to 'willingly' give up your freedoms...we must not be fooled...let us all rise! L&P _________________ Man is the only animal clever enough to build The Empire State Building and stupid enough to jump from it. |

I don't have strength to even rise from the bed at the moment.
But if you push me around in a wheelchair or something, count me in!
*listens to 'Stand Up And Fight' to get into the right mood*
Hey yeah, let's do it! Me and you and they and us and those and her and all the clarts in the whole world! Viva la Revolución!
So... What's the plan?
I have a cunning plan... _________________

Well, now that you're up you need to put on some red clothes.
I suddenly went into extreme fatigue, why isn't anyone on MSN to kill time with me? L&P _________________ Man is the only animal clever enough to build The Empire State Building and stupid enough to jump from it. |

ID Cards are shite
They won't stop anything
Blunkett is a populist tw*t
And that is the only reason he's pursuing it

Just to play Devils advocate for a while.
What are the downsides to these ID cards? _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,

Arguements against ID cards:
You'll have to pay to get one.
Will be expensive to put together, monitor and keep secure the database of biometric information. That money could be better spent elsewhere.
Increase likelihood of police hassling people to produce their ID
May get fined if you lose it/don't produce it on demand
If people really want to forge an ID card then they'll surely be able to find a way to do it
It will be harder for underage kids to buy alcohol from off licenses thus denying them the rights of passage experience of drinking cider on parks
ID card may have photo on and I always look crap in passport photos |

You have to pay for a Driving license and Passport right now anyway.

Yes but if successful then much money could be saved from area's such as criminal investigation.

Again, true but not much different to what happens already with Police giving out producers

May happen eventually - it always does of course.

You've never been 'suspicious looking' and thus never had to produce a passport/identification document on demand so you don't know what it's like. I hear in some countries some people have to, this sounds to me like a version of that. basically my problem is that I don't trust this goverment anymore, the id card give them huge control over me, what I do, where I go. A huge fine if I don't want one. No NHS treatment without one. What if you've one of the anti-war protesters and they decide to penalise you - the id card is the perfect weapon. |

There was a poll on TV last night which said 85% of people think Blair should quit now. But he'll still win the next election because the only alternative is Howard. Maybe we should be like the States and only allow the PM to serve 2 terms. |
