				  | Funny Tommy mentioned them on a previous thread, cause i was thinking of posting 'bout them tonite,
I don't know how many fans of theirs are on here, but after listening to the fantastic Bwyd Time, I wondered what everyone's thoughts were on their latest album Sleep/Holiday?

I personally think its very dull in places, and really disappointing and i play it looking forward for it to end, which i never ever had to do with Gorkys album before. There are some sweet tunes on there, 'Happiness', Waking for Winter', 'Shore Light', but songs like 'Pretty as a Bee', and 'Single to Fairweather' sound so m.o.r compared to their back catalogue, and even the obligitory 'rocker' Mow The Lawn is nothing to write home about.

I think they're missing the midas touch of Gorwel Owen, he only produced 2 songs off this album, and though I don't expect them to go back to writing songs like there is on Tatay, and Bwyd Time, I really liked the direction they were going with Blue Trees and How I Long......, sort of acoustic folk pop but with that classic Gorky's sound,

I know this should be posted on Sparky's sister site www.gorkys.com but they might have a bit of a bias view on there, and even if this is ignored it given me summit to do for 5 minutes.

 hmm

				  | I've been on the Gorky's site a couple of times before but I only just registered there. It's not as good as this messageboard though, it's all confusing and messed up. Anyway, I posted a message there and asked for recommendations... which Gorky's album I should get first? You see, I only have a couple of songs on some compilations, but that's all. I think I'd like to know them better because I kind of liked those songs.

				  | my fave gorky's album is still

barafundle a cracking album that one, and very summery and poppy too.
i remember going to see spiritualized a fair few years back, and gorky's were the support band - i had never heard them before. they came on stage (it was at the buckley tivoli) to absolutely no support from the crowd - don't think anyone even noticed! the singer asked if anyone had a request - not one person said a word! he had a cob on all gig he did, they played a lot of nasty noise that day, and i thought it was great, so went out and got one of their albums and fell in love with them ever since. they do have their noisy moments - like the track

  sally webster

but also have their moments of pop beauty -

  patio song

   and countless others...
 so get your mitts on

  barafundle

   tommy, and the compilation album

  introducing

thats another good place to start.
 sleep/holiday

is good, possibly not up to their earlier standards tho, still, a band that everyone should own at least one record by!!
