this is from a free newspaper called Metro that we get free at tube stations...they gave the album 3 stars out of 5:
'Few have shown such indifference to a Top Ten hit as Martin Carr, who, with former band the Boo Radleys made one of the most memorable singles of the 1990s (Wake Up Boo!), then left soon after in the pursuit of more idiosyncratic creative fulfilment. With new band Brave Captain, he's immersed himself in the sort of cut-and-paste beat folk that beck has made a fortune from, only with much less commercial success. All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Graceis, then, a modest collection of lo-fi glitch pop that tries to submerge Carr's heart-snagging songwriting talent in dissonant layers of machine generated psychadelia and beguiling instrumental detours. As such, it's a frequently frustrating record, which, one suspects, is just the way Carr likes it.'
I like the phrase 'heart snagging', very apt, and 'beguiling instrumental detours' is the best description of what I tend to call noodling... |

"All of which adds up to a fantastic avant-garde pop album that’s an absolute joy from beginning to end." _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,
feeling so removed, drifting thru stealing air then...
pause and think about it, try to move and shift the pain, but it's there you feel it kicking and you scream and feel alive." |
