20 ESSENTIALS IN AN A-TEAM EPISODE

INTRO

"In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground.

Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team."

1. Hannibal (generally in a most unconvincing disguise) meets the desperate client and hears their sob story. He refuses the case, prompting a heartfelt plea. Hannibal, a soft touch at heart, changes his mind and jovially informs the client that they’ve just hired The A-Team.

2. The gang have to bust Murdock out of the military mental hospital where he lives whilst avoiding Hannibal’s nemesis Colonel Decker (and his trusty sidekick Captain Crane). Decker is determined to capture The A-Team but he's always a step behind.

3. Faceman dresses up and smooth talks the staff (more often than not, it's a woman unable to resist his good looks) into giving him access to Murdock.

4. Murdock has an affliction-of-the-week which serves as a great excuse for comedic gags and funny dialogue. In the series, his conditions included an allergy to microwaves, a belief that he was the leader of the Golf Ball Liberation Front and an imaginary insect friend.

5. BA disses Murdock ("What's that crazy fool doin’ here?") as soon as he sees him.

6. BA realises that if Murdock is present, they’ll be flying soon. He threatens violence if anyone puts him on a plane ("I ain't flying Hannibal!").

7. BA is drugged and/or tricked onto a plane.

8. When BA wakes up, the gang tell him an elaborate story to explain away their comparatively short journey time across the state. Or the fact that they've ended up in Mexico.

9. If the gang end up somewhere in the country, Faceman makes a move on the local town beauty.

10. The A-Team have their first encounter with the villain-of-the-week. Hannibal’s cocky attitude annoys said villain. He threatens The A-Team.

11. At some point, BA will say 'I pity the fool' (as in this gem: "I pity the fool who goes out tryin' to take over the world, then runs home cryin' to his mamma!").

12. The villain's crooked operation is seriously dented by The A-Team so he rounds up his henchman (typically, the villains would fall into stereotypical ethnicities/groups such as hillbillies, Latinos, urban gangsters etc.). The villains are easily identified by the fact that they're all mingers.

13. The baddies succeed in trapping The A-Team in some kind of enclosed building (such as a shed or a cell).

14. To the stirring strains of music not a million miles away from Mike Post’s theme, The A-Team use whatever odds and ends are to hand and construct weapons of mass destruction to aid their escape (they usually made some kind of a machine gun and grenades but once they built an ultra-light plane out of a lawnmower engine and duct tape).

15. The A-Team surprise the villains by blasting their way out of wherever they’re imprisoned. Cue shots of jeeps, cars, trucks and vans exploding and flipping over as a battle commences. The henchmen would usually run from their wrecked upside-down vehicles only to face a barrage of gunfire and miraculously survive that too. No one is killed on The A-Team.

16. The gang watch gleefully as the villains run away. Hannibal lights a cigar and crows, "I love it when a plan comes together!"

17. Colonel Decker and his trusty sidekick Captain Crane roar onto the horizon. Hannibal spots them and signals to his men that it’s time to go.

18. Goodbyes are exchanged with the grateful clients.

19. Faceman has a last tender scene with the local town beauty.

20. The show closes on a humorous note (a safe bet was generally BA and Murdock’s antagonistic relationship) and a freeze-frame, complete with cheesy grins all round
