Yep, the Pope is dead. Just announced 15 minutes ago.
The institution that he was leading for the last 27 years may be corrupted, but I believe the Pope himself was a good man, a man of peace. I'm not a religious person and didn't always agree with this fella, but this is still a bit sad.
Rest in peace, old lad.

Yes, it is strange as I can't remember anyone but him being pope. I have family of a Roman Catholic following, and it does feel strange in a strange way. Although I'm not really that religious, I do feel sad about it. He was a good man and did a lot for his people in his country and around the world. The pictures on the news of San Pietro is amazing, it's quite eery, but very moving. I'm sure he's in a better place now.

Hmm...

There is the matter of his refusal to relax the Catholics' rules on contraception which hasn't exactly helped reduce the spread of AIDS.

Don't forget what the Catholic Church stands for. If I was God I'd want nothing to do with that lot.

That's not to say I'm catholic. In fact, if I was, I'd never be out of the confession box. I have a load of Italian family and loads of them are catholic, particularly the elder ones, that's all. I think lots of them went to convent schools. However, I always find it amazing when so many people get together to mourn people, in fact I probably would have to say I find it very, very surreal. In fact the whole big mourning and death thing is surreal, then again I do have a load of empty 1664 bottles around me at the moment.

There is enough money within the Catholic Church to ensure that every poor man women and child could eat and have a better life... so why don't they hand it over?

Well, religions have started countless wars, and the Catholic church has been responsible for murdering millions of people, they've banned contraception, protected corrupt officials and paedophiles within it's organisation, so none of them are angels. They're filthy rich, that's right, but so are many others on this planet and they do fuck all to help anyone else.
I'm not a religious person, but I understand people who are. However, I can't stand fanatic people who take it all way too seriously. Religions have caused so much misery in the history, and starting a war because of some fucking religion is just wrong. The Pope did a good job when trying to bring all the religions closer to each other...
Well, after typing all this, I'm not so sure about the Pope was a good man bit in my first message anymore, but I think it wouldn't be right to call him a bad man either. (The Badman Rules Forever!)
All very religious people are a bit weird anyway.

So who'll be the next pope? I think it would be pretty cool if it was some black guy, perhaps that Nigerian priest/cardinal/whatever who's been on the news sometimes.
And what will be his name? We've already had two John Pauls... maybe it's time for George Ringo now. Rolling Eyes

*laughs at his own silly joke and goes to eat lunch*

Thing is now, I can't stop thinking about the Cardinals being like that of people in Father Ted! Maybe they are all singing My Lovely Horse now.
Anyway, all religions are greedy, it's scary how much land in our country is owned by the CoE, surely they could raise a bit of cash that way to help those in need. Didn't someone say that religion is merely a load of flowers hiding a chain?
Any may I complement TommyBoo on his stance on this whole thing.

The biggest landowner in Britain used to be British Rail as they owned the land either side of all the railway lines in the country. I expect that railtrack or whatever they call themselves now have taken that title!

The CofE do own a lot of land. Did you know that they are the landlords of the Metro Centre in Gateshead? The first huge shopping mall in the country and a shrine to Sunday trading and all things they are supposed to be against....
But a moneyspinner nonetheless.

The Catholic church is based on a doctrine of Misogyny (see Paul's letters in the Bible) and co-option of pagan beliefs. The Roman Emperor (I forget who) who "converted" to Christianity and founded the Catholic Church was not actually Christian at all. He just saw that this was the up and coming theing and decided to back the winner! So you could say it is all based on lies! There again the Church of England is as bad. HenryVIII started that so he could get divorced! He also broke up the Roman Catholic monasteries as he realised they held more power in England than he did as King.

Religion is supposed to be a good thing, but in general it seems to be something that people use for their own ends to wield power, rather than follow the ideology. If you actually look at what Jesus taught, it bears no resemblance to any " organised Church".

I think the only religion that seems to practice what it preaches is Buddhism.

The link doesn't even work, whoever posted it is a bit of a dummy. Wink

The new pope has been elected... Joseph Ratzinger, some German guy, now known as Benedict XVI. They say he's even more conservative than John Paul II, so if God really exists, he will get rid of this guy soon. Why do they have to wear those silly clothes, they look like gremlins! Very Happy
Yes, I don't know why I'm actually watching this shit either.
But I thought they would have chosen Gerard Houllier. Sad

The bloke is 78! 78 years old! No wonder they turned me down and told me to "come back in 50 years or so". There can't be many jobs in the world which Bobby Robson would be considered too young for but being Pope is one of them.
