How good is this album?
I'm sitting listening to it slugging whisky from the optic on the shelf to my left and life is good... after the temporary hell of work today!

I've just bought "Rain Dogs" by Tom Waits - is it one of his best? _________________ Find a job you like, and add five days to every week. |

You might recognise Downtown Train - Rod Stewart covered it a few years ago, with mixed results!
Rain Dogs is pretty good, it's not the Whiskey-soaked-late-night-speakeasy vibe from the 70's that made Blue Valentines so appropriate for my mood yesterday. It's his more spiky rhythmed stuff he did in the 80's.
Highlights for me would be Jockey Full Of Bourbon, Time, 9th & Hennepin, Walking Spanish and the negro spiritual of Anywhere I Lay my Head.
If you like any of what you hear on Rain Dogs, get Swordfishtrombones I reckon that's one of his best. Heart Attack And Vine is good, also Frank's Wild Years is worth a punt for Hang On St. Christopher alone.
Of the earlier stuff, Small Change (Tom Trauberts Blues, Bad Liver And A Broken Heart, Small Change... it's Bukowski set to music!)
and of course the aforementioned Blue Valentines are particular favourites of mine.
Another one worthy of mention is Take It With Me from Mule Variations, a simply beautiful song.
I supppose he's the sort of artist you either get or you don't. Alot of people I know are put off by the gravelly voice, but he writes great songs and as Rod has proved on more than one occasion - nobody sings them as well as Tom! _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

rain dogs is my favourite. the lyrics are hilarious 'cemetary polka' especially.
i like 'em all but my favourite whiskey one is 'heart of saturday night'. the string arrangements are beautifull. his voice is really mellow, i think it's a good, allbeit slightly misleading, place to start with tom waits.
about rod. aye, i agree but he's made some great records. it's hard to say that because he does appear to be fourteen carat wanker.

I just picked up 'The Heart of Saturday Night' a few weeks back. Beautiful.
Also got Asylum Years but I think that's a compilation, innit? |
