I like 'what about the voice of getty lee, how did it get so high, i wonder if he talks like an ordinary guy, 'i know him and he does' ' from Shady lane by pavement.
Ok its not the best but its a personal favourite.
also Wives of Farmers by Grandaddy is almost perfect, really simple but beautiful.
And River Guard by Smog, is nice. |

A minor point but it's Geddy Lee!

Stephen Malkmus of Pavement is possibly one of the finest lyricists ever.
"Architecture students have an itch they cannot scratch
Never build a building til you're 50
What kind of life is that?"
Love that Pavement |

There are way too many of them but from the 90’s the kings have to be Martin and Jarvis. Because we already know Martins stuff and this song came up today somewhere else:
Party Hard - Pulp
I used to try very hard to make friends with everyone on the planet.
I've seen you havin' it, havin' it yeah but now you've just had it.
Entertainment can sometimes be hard when the thing that you love is the same thing that's holding you down.
This man is dangerous, he just shed his load on your best party frock. Before you enter the palace of wisdom you have to decide: are you ready to rock?
Oh can you party with me?
Can you show me a good time?
Do you even know what one looks like?
& I don't need to hear your stories again - just get on the floor & show me what you're made of. Just what exactly are you made of?
Baby, you're driving me crazy. Baby, you're driving me crazy.
I was having a whale of a time until your uncle Psychosis arrived.
Why do we have to half kill ourselves just to prove we're alive?
I'm here whenever you need me & whenever you need me I won't be here.
& have you ever stopped to ask yourself?
If you didn't come to party then why did you come here?
Why did you come here?
Baby, you're driving me crazy.Baby, you're driving me crazy.
& do you really know want to know just how come you turned out so dumb?
When the party's over will you come home with me?
When the party's over will you come home with me?
Now the party's over will you come home to me. Will you come home to me? |

Martin and Jarvis - good choices. And Party Hard is an excellent song.
Aside from those, I have to admit that one of my favourites for lyrics are They Might Be Giants. Their lyrics usually range from the brink of genius (
Birdhouse In Your Soul
or
Ana Ng
) to the brink of silliness (
Particle Man
or
Exquisite Dead Guy
)
"D, world destruction
Over an overture
N, do I need
apostrophe T, need this torture?" _________________ "It's too beautiful to stay inside..." |

Hmmm gotta say Fairytale of New York by the pogues, especially this heartbreaking bit
"I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can’t make it all alone
I’ve built my dreams around you"
And also The Mondays...lyrics to celebrate!
"I only went with your mother ’cause she’s dirty" _________________ www.myspace.com/storkboychoons

PULP.....
"You take up my time like some cheap magazine. When I could have been learning something, oh well, you know what I mean"
From the same period, Help the Aged is just damned hysterical.
And his lyrics for Dishes are fucking rich:
"I am not Jesus though I have the same initials. I am the man who stays home and does the dishes."
"A man told me to beware of 33. He said, "It was not an easy time for me"
"I'll read a story if it helps you sleep at night. I've got some matches if you ever need a light. I am just a man but I am doing what I can to help you." _________________ "Even I know the solution: love, music, wine and revolution..." (magnetic fields)

I do.
It might be more like cheese already though, now when I think about it. _________________

Stay away from my dresses and my lady-bits che. I've told you before. I wont be warning you again. _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,
