the industry is still dying for another Oasis Britplop-era phenomenon
The Verve were the great false dawn
then it was the Stereophonics, then Travis, and the latest is Coldplay (becoming blander, more inoffensive, safe and marketable to all as time goes on)
built up by hype borne out of nothing but the desire to sell shitloads of records
then a load of people think, if they're talked about, they must be good, and they 'buy into' the hype
a lot of the same people will have the latest U2 or Robbie Williams album sitting on the coffee table for guests to see
and they can all agree how great U2 are, or how great Robbie is, without any of them giving an honest opinion
coz most people don't want to be seen as different
Oasis just got their 7th UK #1 single in 10 years... it's taken U2 twenty-five years to get five of them, and yet we're told they're the biggest band in the world?
a shitload of people buying tickets to see them are going to say they went, and to be part of a big crowd, no one standing out or being different
it's just funny how Oasis went shit at the same time as the herd decided they were the band to say you liked |

I don't think the herd has anything to do with it, they only did one decent album and the rest was just lazy & lacklustre.
I remember seeing them at Glastonbury in '95 and hearing Roll With It for the first time. I though it was complete rubbish, so walked off and did something else!
In the 90's Oasis were thought of as the best thing ever and that pretty much summed up the state of music. _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

that last part was just a bit of a throwaway comment. but regardless, you're mistaken if you think I believe they went shit after the 2nd album. I only care for two songs on it. Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger are not the two either, they're both overrated and a bit pants.
still, miles better than that poxy Angels songs, as far as overrated crap goes... |

song* (not songs)
I didn't make the Clocks comment, either. That must have been an imposter. |

The Beatles... U2, REM, basically any other Stadium band can be heard on that album. Still, I actually think they succeeded. Sure as hell beats Be Here Now into a shitty cocked hat.

"...the herd..." ???
Ah, I see the spirit of misanthropy & snobbery is alive and well!
Most people don't want to be different, no. But is that any better than being different for the sake of it? We're all part of a herd, just different ones, and unfortunately the Boos/Brave C herd is a small (yet selective!) one.
Besides, if Coldplay were making music just to sell loads, surely they wouldn't have been pipped at the post by a that frog thing? _________________ Scattershot Writing: www.jameseverington.blogspot.com |

i haven't heard any of the new album except the single. first time i heard it i thought "why are they playing something off the last album, isn't there a new single out?"
isn't there something a bit cynical about making no changes at all to the style that has made them so successful? isn't that partly what people hate about "artists" like phil collins? and isn't it one of the things that makes martin such a great songwriter, that he can write songs that encompass a wide range of styles and pull them all off?
if people like coldplay that's fine with me. the singles are nice enough. but being able to write a decent tune doesn't make them immune from any criticism, does it? |

What if is a brilliant song, but it's the only one I find of any note on the album. I suppose Coldplay are one of those bands that will be hyped beyond belief but are no more than OK with occasional moments of genius (What if, Trouble specifically).

1) I was thinking of a certain bunch of people who were slagging me for liking Oasis one week, then deciding they were the thing to like the next
2) Who said anything about being different for the sake of it? does that mean anyone who's different is a fraud? I think not
3) I never said Coldplay were making music to sell loads. it's the industry who love someone they can depend on to shift records. Coldplay are a band who don't do anything that would make the average person embarrassed to say they like them. they're the great white hope. yawn. |
