My computer froze so i turned it off but when it rebooted my screen has no icons, just the mouse. i cannot, repeat, cannot start it in safe mode.

I haven't got a clue what my admin password is, I didn't even know I had one so I can't start the troubleshooting stuff from the XP installation disc.

The album is on there, all my music is on there. I'm beginning to worry.

Help!

hmm. let's hope there's nothing wrong with the hard drive.

perhaps you'll find one of the following sites useful, go have a look:
http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/icons.htm
http://daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread28765.html
http://www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/t19518.html

good luck, i wish could help you more, but i'm afraid i'm just not nerd enough then. Confused
i hope you had taken some backups at least(just in case...)

it sounds like your Windows Explorer isn't running for some reason though...
can you go to the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and see if the explorer.exe is running at all? (under the 'processes' tab)

also, can you run your computer in the DOS mode?

Have you got the task bar with the Start menu?

If you have, hit the Start button and go to "all programs" - "accessories" - "System tools" - "system restore" and restore the PC to the last pre-crash restore point.

That might just fix the problem.

I hate computers, I'm up way past my bedtime trying to find the spyware thats got into my PC causing pop up ad's to appear all the time. Am very tired and want to go to bed but the scan software is taking forever. The pop up ad's are mainly for mortgages, i'm the most financially irresponsible person in the world but even I wouldn't consider taking out a mortgage with a company which resorts to advertising using pop up ads on computers.

Ten minutes later and its still not finished, have listened to the whole of Zane Lowe's interview with Gorillaz, the live tracks were good but the interview bit was dull. Damon was moaning cos Think Tank only sold a million copies world...and the scan has finished now after an hour and still hasn't got rid of the stuff i wanted it to. i hate computers.

spookily i have spent the weekend reformatting my hard drive and re-installing xp due to my pc going proper psycho. fortunately adequate backups of my data were in place.

although there is initially a degree of frustration when you realise what you are going to have to do, there is a satisfying feeling as the re-installation completes and the pc starts up in seconds rather than minutes.

it feels the same as when i have had a shave for the first time in a few days, the first steps of a new micro-era in my life, and everything is temporarily fresh and pure.

if it was possible to reformat my brain and re-install my mind i would definiteley do it, and i would select ntfs rather than fat32 file system, as it seems to be slightly faster for retreiving information and less likely to become corrupt.

Good point about reformatting the brain there Sparky.
Never mind Windows XP, I always find Theakstons XB and Wadworthy 6X corrupt the memory and brain functions severely, and have been known to cause illegal operations to be performed and sporadic shutdowns.

I've had to reinstall the Windows XP virus on my PC 4 times in two years so far and I'm contemplating a fifth as it's playing up again & I want to put a bigger drive in. You would think 180GB across 2 Hard drives would be enough really! Remember the days when a 4GB drive seemed huge? You'd struggle get XP and MS Office on that now!

Sounds like yours has thrown it's toys out of the pram BC!

For gods sake copy the new album somewhere else before you start messing around with your PC Martin, too many Franks have died already putting that thing together without having to start all over again.
