Yeah, I never saw George play, but my dad says that he was "one of the best" and I've seen some of his greatest goals (and other things).
It's just a shame that it all had to end like this. George was the first "rock 'n' roll footballer", I guess he died a rock'n'roll death too.
He got another chance to live a few years ago but he fucked it all up. But well, who am I to judge him - he achieved more than I probably ever will and lived his life how he saw fit. So, rest in peace, George Best!
Here's a little video of George's greatest moments that I found, it's a big download (17MB) but well worth it, I think.

reading the comments in the Guardian from people who knew him well there, it was particularly sad that so many of them said that with hindsight they might have made a difference to him but they were too wrapped up in their own lives and careers. several said 'i had enough on my own plate at the time'.
glowing reports of his football and by the time he was 26 he was on the way out...that's a wasted life. _________________ (and gillworm! she's so funny!) |

Just a quick thanks to Tommyboo (clearly a legend in himself) for the video footage. Best out there. How did you find that so quick?
Cheers

I'm told me first Argyle game was against Fulham when George Best played for 'em. It could be my bruv being nice but i like to think its true. I'd have been 6 at the time and i know i first went to games that time so its possible! Otherwise i saw him twice in friendlies, scored a hat-trick in one but was still upstaged by Paul Mariner. Yes really.
RIP. |
