I usually roll my eyes at people going on about 'album of the year' as late (/early) as November, but I have to make an exception here as I can't see there being a better band album this year than Aaagh! by Republic Of Loose - which was released last month to critical acclaim and debuted at #2 in the album charts here, despite the band themselves releasing it. Their two albums are now my two favourite albums by anyone Irish, ever, but they deserve better than that - the new one is already one of my favourite albums by anyone from anywhere, and I reckon some people on here would like them as well, hence this piece of spam. NME will never like them, the band are too good for that. What more can I say? I'll just provide some recent articles/interviews/reviews and some links where you can listen for yourself

ENTERTAINMENT.IE ALBUM REVIEW:

You can hear four songs from the new album on their MicePace, here:

Break!, Shame, and Comeback Girl are just three of the best songs on the new album. The latter was supposedly the most played Irish single on Irish radio in 2005, although the album is, lyrically speaking especially, largely anything but radio friendly...

Which of the two albums is the best? I'll go out and buy it today if it's available anywhere in this God-forsaken shithole.

I'd say the new one is better. The debut has some great tunes (Kiodin Man, Girl I'm Gonna Fu*k You Up, Hold Up! etc) but I think it probably goes on a bit too long in the end. The new one isn't short either but probably captures how good they are live better than the first one. It's more modern sounding than the debut as well.

Maybe Che and our other regular poster who has both albums will say otherwise. I don't know.

haha. That's not really surprising, what with the lack of coverage from the likes of the En-em-y. Not that they haven't played loads of UK gigs, and all the big festivals, including Glastonbury.

Rolling Eyes

http://www.republicofloose.com will tell you some places where it can be bought. It's cheaper in the UK than here! Bloody typical.

'TOTALLY DUBLIN' MAGAZINE:
Republic of Loose
ARRGH! (Loaded Dice Records)
Way out on their own in this country, the time has come for the 'publicans to step up the tempo and see if they can shake booty across both sides of the water. The good news is that AAAGH! certainly puts the right foot forward with some killer tracks, slinky grooves and a dirtbag approach with tongues in cheeks and ears as Mick Pyro and the boys don their shiny tracksuits and set glitter balls rotating to some fine fat-ass funk. Thre can't be many people out there who haven't gyrated to Comeback Girl and without doubt it's one of the best singles ever released in Ireland, a dancefloor classic that never fails to move, transcending both indie and dance genres. The track has also turned it back around for the band as they were in danger of letting the initial impact of an Irish funk act genuinely making the kids dance slip into an exercise in showboating, although their excellent live sets never failed to impress, especially within college circuits. After a shaky start with their by now trademark Intro waffle, the record squelches into action on the electro-funk title track which reveals some stock ROL trademark falsetto vocals and low end grunts set to a Cameo rhythm before the tempo rises significantly on The Translation, a sparkling disco track that builds beautifully into its trip the light fantastic chorus. The Eastern-influenced Break! threads the same water as Justin Timberlake's Like I Love Ya while their insistence in including snippets of their manager talking wears thin very quickly. Mid-album tunes Somebody Screamed and All Mine get the record back on track with the former displaying a confidence and belief in their songwriting skills that augers well for the future while the latter (and new single), though not as instantly catchy as its predecessor, is nevertheless an accomplished piece of highly polished, well produced pop.
John Brereton
(See Aslo: Prince - Sign O' The Times (Paisley Park), Those Nervous Animals - The Business Enterprise (My Friend John)).

I'll try to ignore the occasional incorrect spelling of the album title.
