well with fopp going i did some reading and saw this. i didn't like fopp and still blame them a little for the demise of replay and imperial (more of which later) in bristol but mr cd was a treasure haven on me trips to the capital as was selectadisc, such a shame they've moved on. i love proper stores with labels on the records saying what they are like and staff giving you tips on what to look out for. i know the internet has given us all a chance to form our own musical journey but i'd still love a local indie store to be on hand to help out when i'm struggling to find good new albums, particuarly dance ones so i'm sorry to see some of them in london getting hit as well. true internet sites of pure groove and piccadilly provide excellent descriptions/recommendations but i do miss just walking in and browsing.

and back to imperial. being emotional i vowed never to step on the premsies once it closed as the biggest reason for it shutting was the landlord trippling the rent as he had got planning permission for a pub/eatery to be built on it as he knew the rental charge was higher... its over 2 years since imperial shut and joy joy joy apart from a couple of months selling outlet clobber, its been shut ever since. serves 'im right and i 'ope it stay that way. robbing robbing bastard!

still miss imperial though and the post-its of love, they scored adv for myself 9/10 on their reviews and got me into quantic, boards of canada, oh loads of top acts!

This is the future...

...where albums are loss-leaders in order to get you to buy concert tickets.

I'll also miss Fopp.

Booooo!

Nottingham still has Selectadisc though - like Fopp, but no books, darker, and they are a lot more judgemental than Fopp staff about your purchases!

Sheffield is now officially buggered. Think we have HMV and Virgin left (in the centre, anyway) Confused

Fopp has been the only place I've been able to find the likes of ATD, The Knife, Juan Mclean etc in the last few years. I'm well and truly stuffed and not happy at all.

RIP

In my hometown there were at least three in town center, now there is one.

that's totally fucked up. what is the thought process that ends with a decision to give away your new album with the mail on sunday?!

is the future a place where chart-pap is sold cheap at the supermarket and for anything else you need to buy on the internet?

I'm not sure which is worse at the moment, being Prince or being Ash.

Mind you, I saw something (somewhere I can't remember) saying 95% of all album sales were still CD (5% split between vinyl and downloads) so maybe there's not as much too worry about as thought...

Although the fact that Shed Seven are reforming might refute that.

This is all really sad. I didn't know about fopp, that's about the only shop I buy records in these days. Not that I buy many, as I get old and increasingly just listen to albums I already knew I liked.

I don't think albums will die though, they're too much of a different thing to singles, or single songs as mp3s. People who really like music will still want albums.

Apparently HMV have bough 6 Fopps and the online name... Including the Nottingham one. Yay. Doubt it will be the same though...

hahah, a good old discoRdance joke... they're so poor but I just gotta laugh. Very Happy

i've never bought any music on mp3 or in any other digital formats (except for the bravecaptain singles club tunes) and i'm probably not going to either. i just don't like the idea... sure, it may be a cheaper way to buy music, but then the songs really should be a lot cheaper. i also hate all the copy protection shit and the fact that you can only play the music on your own computer and you need some stupid special programs (e.g. itunes) to play them.

exploring the contents of the bargain basket in the corner of some smelly little record shop is always a lot of fun and you can't beat the feeling when you find an album that you've been trying to find for years for less than a fiver, or when you buy an album that has a nice-looking cover and when you get back home and play it you find out that it's actually really good.
fuck itunes and their shitty software and players Mad
