I just heard this on the radio.
Can't believe it.
I was in a cafe just a couple of tables away from him a few months back, full of beans he was.
I guess if you're going to go you might as well leave a big fuck off legacy behind you, but guys like Tony Wilson should be living til 97 not 57.
Just like with John Peel I guess I just never imagined there would be a time when Tony Wilson wasn't around. |

i went to pay my respects outside the hacienda today. there's a whole load of flowers and messages already. he seemed like an incredibly decent person, and he should be proud of what he started, and that his legacy still lives on.
RIP tony xxx |

I used to joke in my early 50s that I'd had such a fantastic life, I'd be happy to die. And then suddenly, I find some other reasons for living and just like get excited again about life when it comes along. So that was slightly annoying. I think I was a lord of my own presumption for thinking I'd be happy to die
". - Tony Wilson
It is really sad, as patrickconnor said he seemed like a really decent person. I saw him being interviewed in the Cornerhouse in Manchester a few months ago and assumed he was on the mend.
What a full and interesting life to lead though. I still remember be very confused when I found out that the bloke who presented 'Flying Start' on Granada was the same man who owned Factory Records. It was like discovering that Trevor McDonald managed NWA.
RIP Tony. No matter what anyone else says you were right to put out 'Round and Round' as the second single off Technique. |
