my favourite albums of the year have been the manics one, the kid606 one and the yeah yeah yeahs one. i'm not sure that the yyy's one is actually a classic but the first two tracks are so skyscrapingly good that what follows is almost irrelevant.

person of the year is karen o. when i'm rich i'm going to pay her to sit in my living room and sing songs from 'it's blitz' to make me happy when I'm sad and sing songs from the 'where the wild things are' soundtrack to make me meloncholic when i'm happy. the rest of the time she'll do general housework and hopefully she'll be able to fix my tumble dryer.

that julian casablancas tune might be single of the year. 'songs remind me of you' by annie is another contender, its a pity both albums were disappointing.

oh yeah, the xx album is brilliant too and so is the juan maclean one. actually 'one day' might be the best song this year.

in summary: music!

Updated

Well, Wintersleep came along this year and gave me an album to love and cherish like I never thought I could again. Album of the decade and right up there with my all-time faves. Laser Beams and Miasmal Smoke are just simply amazing and i couldn't recommend it enough. They were rubbish supporting Editors though!

Shy Child gave me my track of the year, but wow, there have been so many! Cold War By Flow Machines wa second, from a monumental album I still can't believe was given away. I can't praise it highly enough.

Empire of The Sun win the reocrd for amazing first 5 songs, god-awful rest of album award.

The Big Pink first track blew my tiny little mind. It's a good album but that first track just shreds my nerves. Awesome.

Just heard Cymbals Eat Guitars once tonight and that makes it straight into my list....... WOW!!! Brilliant mixture of Pavement and the Boo's. Listen to "Share" and tell me it's not a 24 year-old Martin Carr. Will be buying it the second I make it near a City again.

Also recently listened to and added to toTD thread is Laura Marling, Goodbye England (covered in snow). Beautifully simple and simply beautiful.

The Bad Lieutenant album was okay but did contain a couple of genuine spine tingling moments. It;s always nice to hear Barney's voice.

Live, Idlewild take the crown for an amazing Leadmill appearance, but then, I've seen about 4 bands this year. Having a kid will do that to you Wink Their album didn't do anything for me. Shame, as The Remote Part is incredible.

Welcome back into my heart: Wilco and Super Furry Animals, both rediscovering what madre them great (to me) in the first place.

Other fantastic buys this year include Vitalic, Bombay Bicycle club, Juan Maclean, The Joy Formiddable (signed copy - yay!), Donsaur Jr, Doves and Patrick Wolf.

In all, a fantastic year, not at all conveyed well enough in this message alone!

Looking forward to Shy Child, Delphic and a few others in 2010. Long live the bc board for me to tell all 4 of you about it Smile

x

well was 2009 the best year for albums, like, ever? nah probably not, nope not 'cos it wasn't ace - it was - but just that i'm sure since god 'imself first penned michael rowed the boat ashore (hallelujah!) there's always been top material out there, perhaps its just that this was the first year since t'internet was born that the cool kids finally in unison all used it instead of them music publications to determine what albums n that they bought... well i reckon it was that anyway.

to be honest, and forgive me this line 'cos i'll never be able to say it again, whilst listening to mp3s on the copacabana Smile in june i figured that the longcut, the horrors and kyte had released the ablums of the year and that no one would come close. as it turned out the fauns matched 'em and plenty of others 'ad a good go. if pushed then my album of the year was the horrors and my 7" of the year would also be their bloomin' splendid whole new way (which, would also be my video of the year to!).

so all said wot indie-rocked my world this year was:

live:
longcut / wild beasts / cold cave / horrors / joy formidable / answering machine / lowline / the fauns / pains of being pure at heart / twilight sad / solid gold / lemonade / kyte / telepathe / hjaltalin / ohbijou / exit calm / nova saints / nelson / pastels / middle class rut / s.c.u.m /
i heart hiroshima / friendly fires / daniel land / temper trap / sunshine underground / apache beat

albums:
longcut / horrors / kyte / cold cave / the fauns / lemonade / xx / telepathe /answering machine / pains of being pure at heart / sad day for puppets / deer tracks / st etienne+richard fearless / stellastarr* / solid gold / super furry animals / bombay bicycle club / madness / daniel land / pastels + tenniscoats / wild beasts / day for airstrikes / twilight sad / we were promised jetpacks / the joy formidable

re-issue of the year:
well i'm counting foxbase beta as a newie so its kraftwerks box set. faultless. honestly not my favourite band of all time but has there been a better one? i doubt it, listening to it and thinking how the fuck can the stones etc be heralded as so great? honestly how massive would kraftwerk have been if they'd come out in britain in the 60s? if they been anglo-american? and why the fuck did i never buy the mix when it came out?

Two 2009 tunes I've only heard in the past couple of days which I likes a lot:

hyph mngo by joy orbison
bay of pigs by destroyer (sounds nothing like a song called 'bay of pigs' by a band called 'destroyer' should and that can only be a good thing)

Sparky - well done for keeping this message board going during the year, your work is appreciated.

See you all here in 2010 for more bc board fun.

I'm not sure I knew this existed Confused

I've become a bad Super Furries fan... and a bad Martin Carr one, too, while I'm at it.

I thought 2009 was a pretty shit year for music, other than pop (the chart kind, and I don't even care about that)

Good to know my inane comments and poor attempts at humour will be around to haunt me...

Having finally heard the Xx album I can concur it's marvelous.
