only found out today:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/29/obituary-steven-wells

honestly at times reading his stuff in nme could leave me either the 'appiest, most in agreement fella or the most opposed. loved him 'cos although i wouldn't buy an lp on his recommendation alone (there were other writers i'd go with more) always loved that he had a proper opinion. truly at his sharpest best the funniest music journo i had the pleasure of reading in my yoof.

Did you meet John Peel and Anthony Wilson? Chances are I would have hated to meet Tony, but I was devestated at the loss of these two this decade.

Also, Arthur Lee. I discovered Love, saw them live twice, and lost him, all in the space of 4 years. Awful loss.

met JP once. he was very chilled, polite and contendedly miserable. agree his loss was immense. and arthur lee as well. forever changes is my fave 60s record (though admitedly i don't have that many!).
