Okay, I've been told time and time again that I would LOVE Pavement, but I've never heard anything from them apart from Malkmus' "Jojo's Jacket".
Can anyone recommend any songs to download? Cd's to buy? Or is the DVD a good choice for a beginner?

Pavement ist rad - buy, beg, steal, borrow as much as you can - it's all good, but in no particular order I'd recommend:
Wowee Zowee - angular guitars, obscure lyrics/ references, sweepingly gorgeous
Crooked Rain Crooked Rain - more mellow even alt. country in parts, beautiful tunes
Slanted and Enchanted (esp new edition Luxe & Reduxe) - loads of early stuff, very shouty, a bit of a Fall thing going on - not a criticism
Stephen Malkmus (self title) - mellow, jangly, just lurvely
Every album is very different from the others and yet it is all consistently fantastic. You should love it all....

The new SM & The Jicks album probably deserves the mixed reviews. It's very different from the last, very experimental (in a trad. guitars, bass, keyboards sort of way) and has some tracks that last far too long. But for all that it is still worth it. Why not buy the 6 track ep they've just released 'Dark Wave'. Though it's not one of the stronger tracks, so maybe get the album instead. If you're a Pavement/ SM fan you won't be disappointed.....
