Michael Owen 1998 WC, dive, English goal...not a problem.
Oh and Bresciano's super dive when Zambrotta fairly took the ball from him...I guess he's not a cheat either, because he doesn't play for Italy.

I'm not saying that other teams don't cheat - they do, probably not as much as Italy though. (hmm, and Bresciano sounds like an Italian name anyway... ) Italy and especially Holland have been the worst cheaters in this tournament so far, and I'm very disappointed at Holland actually - I used to like them and there was a time when they were so skillful that they didn't have to resort to cheating, but Arjen Robben, Dirk Kuyt, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy have ruined everything and I'm happy that they're out now.
The BBC live internet commentary says:
"With the clock ticking down Fabio Grosso marauded down the left flank and worked his way into the box before falling over Lucas Neill's prone body"
And that's exactly how I saw it too. Is that worth a penalty? I don't think so. Maybe Grosso wasn't really diving there (he did fall in quite a dramatic way though...) but I think he could have avoided it, and the referee especially should have known that it was never a penalty.
Sepp Blatter was boasting before the World Cup that the new rules and guidelines for the referees will make this the best World Cup ever, but this tournament is turning into a farce. I hope that Blatter the corrupted dickhead won't be chosen as the FIFA president again.

Loads of people have been saying it’s the best world cup ever after the initial excitement of having all football, all the time I don't think I'm enjoying it as much as previous tournaments. It's not like real football, players get booked for nothing challenges and players who've been booked in previous games are either dropped or can't play their normal game because they're scared of missing the next one.
Plus none of the smaller nations look like getting through to the semi's, you need some random teams unexpectedly doing well, like Cameroon in 1990 or Korea last time.
Of course I might just be suffering Switzerland vs Ukraine induced depression. Hopefully the Ghana game tonight will be ace, it's a pity Essien is going to miss it. |

The Holland vs Portugal game was ace, there's nothing like a bit of comedy refereeing to liven up a game. I think players have realised that if you're going to get booked for minor things like looking at the referee in a disappointed way they may as well get full value for their yellow card and maim someone instead. |
haha, that's funny.
it'd be even more funny if it wasn't actually true.

That borders on racism...what, because he may have Italian parents somehow it's in his blood to dive? Bresciano is Australian, not Italian. Are Italians biologically more prone to diving?
In more sad news, Pessotto apparently has fallen out of a window and is at the hospital right now. He has a wife and a young child

Smaller teams have succeeded a little bit, Ghana went through, the Czechs didn't...although wth Koller that might've been different.
And the Ukraine, it was their first time in the WC wasn't it?

For me communism is still a threat, the cold war never ended and I still count Ukraine as being part of the USSR - they've definitely been at a World Cup before, they've just rebranded themselves and get a much worse kit.
Ghana going through instead of the Czech's was definitely an upset, the Czech's looked amazing in their first game. I've become Ghanian now that the Dutch are out. It's a pity the Ivory Coast were in such a tough group, I think they would have made it out of any of the others.
I think I've probably said this before on here but they shouldn't have seedings in football tournaments, it should be like the old European Cup when when it was just a straight draw so you'd get situations like when Liverpool playing Notts Forest in the first round of the competition. The current situation is self perpetuating and makes it harder for other teams/nations to advance up the ladder. |

That was a joke... I have no idea if Bresciano has any connections to Italy, and yes, he's Australian.
Anyway, Italians aren't probably biologically more prone to diving, but their football culture is definitely quite a bit different, and I've got the impression that people there don't mind cheating too much as long as the team that they support wins. But then again, that's quite typical for South European and South American football.
I watch English lower division football and the Finnish league mostly, so I'm just not so used to cheating (I'm not saying that no one in these leagues cheats - it certainly does happen, but not so much). I'd certainly be a bit ashamed if there was a cheater in my favourite team, but then again, I'd love to see everyone play fair but that just doesn't happen anywhere anymore.
But still, even you must admit that cheating and diving is much more common in Serie A than in Premier League or Allsvenskan for example (believe it or not, I watch Allsvenskan sometimes. And Premier League probably isn't a very good example anymore because most of the best players come from other countries...)
Sorry to hear about Pessotto, by the way - although he may not be my favourite footballer, I'd never wish any harm for anyone because of some game. I hope it's nothing too serious and we'll see him in action again soon...

You won't see him in action, he's staff now! And he is one of those footballers that is a better person than footballer.
I don't think there's more cheating on the field in the serie A than the premiere league generally. But other leagues sure (I don't watch Spanish so I don't know).
I'm just tired of people sounding like broken records. Yes, there's a different culture, so understand it and move on, it isn't up to us to change their culture. It isn't as ugly to them as it is to you.
I could say the alcohol culture in England is pathetic and they should learn from southern Europeans to be professionals and hold it...there's better and worse everywhere...

P.S. Tonight let's hope Spain keep doing what they do best...not getting anywhere...hihi (though I doubt it) _________________ Man is the only animal clever enough to build The Empire State Building and stupid enough to jump from it. |

You're a wise man, John Mc. Well said.
I'm rooting for Ghana now as well, well I always support the African teams in the World Cup, but Ghana is the only one left now. Unfortunately I don't think they'll beat Brazil today... I really hope that they do though, all the Brazil hype is sometimes very annoying. I hate it when people say that they like to watch Brazil because they play 'beautiful attacking samba football' (yes, they actually use the phrase "samba football", whatever it means...)
Um... Brazil may have played this beautiful attacking samba football 30 years ago, but I find them very boring to watch nowadays. In this tournament they've been very defensive and I haven't seen their 'amazing personal skills' yet - even the Ghanaian players got some much better tricks to show in the Czech Rep game!
So yeah, come on Ghana! The Brazilians have already won too many World Cups anyway.

The Brazilians did play lovely samba football in the second half against Japan. Apparently Ronaldinho is scared to try the kind of tricks he does every week for Barcelona because he sees the World Cup as being more important. It's a pity cos this was meant to the tournament which confirmed him as one of the greats alongside Pele, Maradona and Diouf, it still could happen though if he turns it on in the next few games.
The best bit of skill so far in the world cup was that Argentina goal against Mexico but he's ruined it all by saying it was a fluke. Players should lie always in situations like that and claim they meant it. Never let light in on magic.
I've got loads of work piling up for me to do and yet I've spent most of the afternoon sending nonsense emails and writing sub-Lee Dixon football analysis on here. Am a lazy or am I lone warrior, rebelling against the system? Only time and my next contract review will tell. I'm off to watch the Ghana game. |

well, it's half time at the brazil vs. ghana game and i gotta say that it's not looking good at all. the game itself has been quite entertaining and both teams have been very good, but once again in this tournament the referee is ruining everything! brazil's second goal by adriano was a clear offside, and because ghana's finishing has been terrible throughout the tournament, i'm afraid it's all over for them already.
i bet the referees will be able to watch video replays during the games (when making big decisions) in the next world cup if blatter stays in charge.

Adriano got a yellow card when he should've gotten a penalty though, it all evens out most times.
