Well, at least they're not going to have those stupid Coca Cola names anymore, right? What a load of rubbish!
(Premier League)
Coca Cola Championship
Coca Cola League 1
Coca Cola League 2
Seriously... What the hell? Who could take the competition seriously if the divisions were named like that? What about
Vanilla Coke League 1
and
Cherry Coke League 2
?! OK, fair enough, they have a new sponsor and they're trying to "attract more supporters" (yeah, like a stupid name change will do that!), but why do they make it so bloody confusing? They could have just had Coca Cola Div 1 etc.
Well, at least Barnsley have just been promoted from Division Two to League 1! YEAH I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY!!!
And I don't even like Coca Cola...

Jesus christ... Euro 2004 kicks off tomorrow and it doesn't feel like that at all. I've been waiting for this for two years now, and I had to check just a couple of minutes ago that it
really
starts tomorrow.
It does.
Anyway, it's time for some predictions now.
Who will be the best two teams in each group that qualify for the next round, who will play in the final, and who will finally lift the trophy on 4th July?
FIRST STAGE:
Group A:
Portugal
Spain
Greece
Russia
Group B:
France
Switzerland
England
Croatia
Group C:
Sweden
Denmark
Bulgaria
Italy
Group D:
Czech Republic
Germany
Latvia
Netherlands
QUARTER FINALS:
A1 - B2
A2 - B1
C1 - D2
C2 - D1
SEMI FINALS:
A1/B2 - C1/D2
A2/B1 - C2/D1

These are the teams who I reckon will go through from each group. Pauletta will be top goalscorer in the competition. I've got no idea who'll win it though, I just hope its as good as Euro 2000. That was a brilliant competition, every game in the knockout phases was superb.
Group A:
Portugal
Spain
Group B:
France
England
Group C:
Bulgaria
Italy
Group D:
Czech Republic
Germany |

I bet you just read somewhere that Finland has never ever qualified for the World Cup or Euro Cup, and now you're making fun of it. Haha. I'm not so surprised though, football has never been a big game here and still ten years ago we were happy if we only lost 1-0 against a good opposition. Now things are different, there has been real progress during the last couple of years and more and more Finnish players sign for top European teams - ten years ago there was only one, Jari Litmanen (Ajax Amsterdam).
Finland were very close to getting qualified for World Cup 1998, but a silly and very unlucky own goal against Hungary, on the injury time of the second half of the last game in the qualification group, destroyed the dream.
Finland's qualification group for World Cup 2006 is very difficult again - Czech Republic, Romania and Holland in the same group, it's not going to be easy! But I believe in Finland's chances, we've waited for long enough so it's our turn to be at least a bit lucky.

So Argyle have gone up by 2 divisions! Yay!
Still its a better trade for cash than pissing around with kick-off times and fixture dates I s'pose.
However he is right about the standard of the crowds, up in each division though they went down in the premier this season.
The standard of footie is better than its given credit for however it suffers along with the premier from being a bit to fast and athletic - ya don't see so much jinxing n skill these days! Pah, i've finally turned into me dad... |

I honestly didn't know, I kind of assumed that with Litmanen in the team they'd have qualified for something in the past decade. He still looked good when he signed for Liverpool but for some reason Houllier didn't seem to like him. I thought he might have the same effect for us as Gary McAllister did but it didn't work out and by the sound of things he had a similarly bad time at Ajax. |

Yeah, that's right. I saw Litmanen play a couple of times for Liverpool and I thought he was excellent, so I was quite surprised as well when Houllier decided to keep him on the subs bench.
Jari Litmanen is still one of the greatest football heroes of Ajax Amsterdam, that's probably the reason why he went back there... The beginning was very promising and he played well, until he got injured again. He never recovered from it and he left the club a couple of months ago. Now he's back in Finland in the club where he started his football career... he's the first top class player who has ever returned to the Finnish league. _________________

i thought jari litmanen's form was a bit patchy. some people would have you believe that he was amazing every game, which certainly wasn't true. having said that, he deserved more of a chance, as you couldn't say that the other strikers (particularly heskey, i suppose) were exactly models of consistent excellence!
my euro04 predictions:
Group A:
Portugal
Spain
Group B:
France
England
Group C:
Sweden
Italy
Group D:
Czech Republic
Netherlands
winners: france, though so long as it isn't england i don't care. |

I think that's just the thing that triggered the start of Liverpool's downfall after the mighty cup treble. What happened to Houllier's "squad rotating system"?! In the end he just played his regular players that clearly wasn't good enough to win the Premier League or other competitions - he became too afraid of making changes so maybe it's better that he left.
I haven't been following the situation very closely for some time now, so any news about the new manager? And what happened to Houllier? _________________

we finished 2nd the season after winning the treble. most people feel that the problems started in the summer of 2002, when instead of buying one or two proven stars to make a final jump to the top, houllier bought more "potential" players. the decision to effectively replace anelka with diouf wasn't the best...
i'm not sure squad rotation really reduced that much, except when the squad had injuries and what was left was so weak that rotation wasn't possible, despite all the money spent.
it's pretty quiet on the manager front. i read a few days ago that benitez, who resigned as valencia coach a couple of weeks ago, would be the new liverpool manager within 48 hours. that hasn't happened yet, but it looks certain that he will be the one.
houllier is presumably looking for a new job. i think graeme souness is the only living liverpool manager in work as a manager, so maybe he'll have his work cut out to get a job. |

FOOOOOTYYYYY TIIIIIMEEEEE!!!!!
Match day 1, Saturday 12th.
Full-time:
POR
TU
GAL
1 - 2
GR
EE
CE
0-1 Karagounis 7
0-2 Basinas 50 (pen.)
1-2 C. Ronaldo 90 + 3
Great victory for Greece, very very impressive. Their defense line was very solid until the very last minute of the game, the whole team defended very well. The first goal by Karagounis was a bad defensive mistake by Portugal - they lost the ball in a stupid way in the midfield, Karagounis took it and ran to the edge of the penalty area. A relative weak but an accurate low shot went past the diving Portuguese goalkeeper and into the back of the net, a very nice goal.
Man United's Cristiano Ronaldo brought down a Greek player inside the box in the beginning of the second half and the referee (Pierluigi Collina) awarded a penalty. The free kick and penalty expert Basinas buried the ball to the upright corner of the goal and sent the goalkeeper Ricardo to the wrong way.
Portugal was very disappointing and deserved to lose. They tried to play everything through Figo and C.Ronaldo, but those two obviously don't know that football is a team game - they tried to dribble past the Greeks, usually with no success. Portugal has to improve a lot if they want to qualify for the next round, it practically means that they have to win Spain and Russia in their remaining matches. _________________
